What if I told you that one brewery’s tradition shaped the way the entire world enjoys beer?

Hello Everyone!

This Saturday, February 8, around 2 PM, my friend Calixte and I visited THE most famous brewery in the Czech Republic. A brewery filled with history, founded in 1842. It’s easy to imagine yourself in those places because the main buildings have been well preserved, especially with the iconic red bricks on the chimneys.

Tradition is Tradition

As surprising as it may seem, their beer-making methods have remained unchanged. I was impressed to see that tradition still prevails.

Of course, since 1842, the company has evolved—they have more buildings, etc. But the brewery remains highly autonomous, allowing Pilsner (blond beer) to be the most widespread beer in the world today (80% of production). In the Czech Republic, Pilsner Urquell surpasses all companies in exports and volume.

Drinking Beer: A True Czech Culture

What struck me the most was the Czech people’s love for beer. On average, they drink 188 liters per person per year, compared to only 33 liters in France. For 30 consecutive years, the Czech Republic has been the world's biggest beer consumer. So, as you can imagine, Pilsen is THE beer capital.

A Beer-Loving Nation

I’ve gone out a few times in the evening, and guess what everyone was drinking? No need to remind you. Everywhere I went, at least one person was ordering a beer, whether at night or in broad daylight. It’s part of daily life here.

The Factory and The Tower

While visiting the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, we explored the brewhouse, vast underground cellars, and fermentation rooms.

The factory is enormous; we even had to take a bus to reach another section where they were manufacturing glass. Right next to the glassworks was a towering structure that served multiple purposes: storing raw materials, regulating the brewing process, and standing as an iconic architectural landmark.

Fun Fact to Wrap Up

Did you know that the Czech phrase "Na zdraví!" (meaning "Cheers!") is so integral to their culture that locals joke you’re not truly Czech if you don’t say it before every sip of beer?

So next time you enjoy a Pilsner, don’t forget to raise your glass and say it with enthusiasm:

Na zdraví!

Na Zdravi !!
